Ep 24: This Is How We Do It

This week Chris and I get to record a podcast in person, and it was everything I had hoped it would be. We took time to discuss how Chris and I approach our daily Bible reading. We discuss not just what we read, but how we read it. 
Chris takes us through his reading from Matthew 20:17-34. We talk about how even though Jesus knew ahead of time what was going to happen on the cross, he kept going because he loves us. Then we discuss a mother's request on behalf of her sons as well as the request of two blind men. 
Honestly, it was a good time hanging out with Chris and talking about God.

Ep 23: Let it Grow - A Kingdom Principle

In today's episode, Chris and Robert discuss future plans for their gardens, and Robert opens the discussion about a Kingdom principle that Jesus shared in the form of a parable. Jesus says the Kingdom of God is like seed that "man scatters on the ground. Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how." Mark 4:27 Jesus wants us to let the Kingdom grow in and around our lives.
Robert links the demon possessed man in Mark 5:1-20 to the parable Jesus had just told the day prior. Jesus encouraged the man to go and tell his family all that God had done for him. The man did not only that, but he also visited the 10 cities in his area spreading the good news about what God did for him.
Finally, Chris and Robert discuss the power of the Gospel, the power of a living hope, and the power of the Holy Spirit to work even when we are not aware.

Ep 22: Preparing for the Promise

Today we have an announcement from Robert about what God is doing in his life, and then we get an update on the journey God has Chris on with his current house situation.
Chris asked God a question about what is going on with his house situation, and hears an answer the next morning during his time with God as he read Exodus 13:17 "When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter. For God said, "If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt." God reveals that he is taking Chris the long way around as he prepares him for the promise. Chris explains "that the testing of faith produces perseverance."

Ep 21: Essential Elements for an Excellent Marriage

Whether you are cooking or building a fire, the right ingredients make a huge difference. In cooking, it can be the difference between tasting good and making you sick. When it comes to making a fire, it is simply impossible to make a fire without the right elements. 
Marriage is no different, and Jesus gives us God's design for marriage. In Matt 19:4-6, Jesus takes the Pharisees back to the beginning when he references Gen 2:24&25. The elements God says are required for marriage are: 1) Right Priorities 2) Being Joined in Hot Pursuit 3) Partnership 4) Purity. Without one of these four elements, your marriage is headed for rough waters.

Ep 20: The Power of Partnership

Is it a failure or an opportunity to learn? What is something you look back on in marriage and think "I could have done that differently..."? We tell a few personal stories, and then we start our discussion starting in Ephesians 5:21 "And further,  submit to one another out of reverence for Christ."
Christ's example to us can be found in John 13:1-17 when he washed the disciples feet. The God of the universe, washed the absolutely disgusting feet of the disciples in a perfect demonstration of humility and service. He calls us to submit and serve in the same way. It is with this as an example that we discuss Paul's call to wives in Ephesians 5:22 "Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord."
Finally, we finish by discussing our mother's example of what "A wife of noble character" looks like. She was a good example of the Proverbs 31:10-31 woman. A woman who gets things done in partnership with her husband.

Ep 19: A New Way to Win

We have an update on Robert's potential new role, and his prayer request for a "favorable no."
Then we jump into what it means to be "imitators of God", and how we should love "as Jesus loved us." Both of these calls to holiness by Paul in Ephesians 5:1-2 are foundational to marriage. Without them, we become self focused, and do not seek to serve but to be served. That is a sure intimacy killer.
So with that in mind, we discuss what it means for husbands to "love your wives just as Christ loved the church and gave himself for her..." Eph 5:25

Ep18: Paper Plates and Marriage

No one goes into marriage thinking it will end. However, some people treat their marriage like a paper plate. They use it selfishly, and then discard it when they have gotten all they can from it.
People do not use real dishes, because of the work that comes along with them. If you want a meaningful marriage, like real dishes, the work is worth it! it is important to go to the designer of marriage, God, and do the work that He calls us to do.
As we get ready to dive into what God says about marriage in Ephesians 5, we take time to read Paul's prelude in Ephesians 4 to focus on humility as it is foundational to a good marriage. 
Ephesians 4:1-3 "I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, urge you to live worthily of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace."

Ep 17: Look Where You Want to Go

Happy New Year! This is not your average New Years episode, so we hope you listen in to hear how our Christmas went, and get updates on both of our journeys. We do explain what we do entering a new year, and we hope that you will find it helpful in your own life.
Proverbs 4:26-27 says "Mark out a straight path for your feet; stay on the safe path. Don't get sidetracked; keep your feet from following evil." Chris explains that just like when you are learning to ski, if you do not look where you want to go, you will likely end up eating snow. The same goes for daily life, and so as you seek to be transformed by the renewing of your mind, spend some time in the first few weeks of 2024 looking where you want to go.

Ep 16: Choose Joy

This week we discuss joy. After we tell a few fun personal Christmas stories, we end up talking about talking about the message the angels delivered to the shepherds on the night of Jesus birth. "I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people."
What must that have felt like? An announcement from angels about the Savior of the world wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger. It is hard to imagine, however I bet those shepherds reflected on that reason for joy for the rest of their lives. This Christmas take a moment to reflect on your reasons for joy.

Ep 15: Soil Quality Matters

The quality of soil matters when sowing seed. So what do you do if you find yourself with less than ideal planting conditions? You amend the soil. Takes steps to make your soil better, and help others to improve the condition of their soil. Better soil means a better harvest. God call us to produce spiritual fruit, and good soil certainly helps!
A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. Matthew 13:3-8
